An Anonymous Letter

This letter is for Ranjini’s two young sons: Dear Pirai and Kathir,

Your mum is a very brave woman who has brought you to Australia hoping to find a safe place for you to live. It must be scary when things change in your life so quickly, and you don’t know why. It is hard to explain why our government has taken you to live in Villawood. We don’t know the reason why, either. But we are asking the government if they can do something to change it. A lot of people think that it is not fair.

We want you two boys and your mum to live here in Australia, so that you can grow up to have a happy and safe life. It’s good that more and more people are now starting to ask our government to take notice, when people get locked up and we don’t know why. Your mum has been on TV and on the front page of newspapers – and everyone who has met her says that she is a very kind and loving person. I’m sure she is a very good mum to you too.

We need lots of Australians to make a big noise about this problem, and then hopefully the government will change the way it treats people like your family. We are all thinking of you and we will not stop fighting to find safety for your family.
